May - Period Drive

Students are welcome to donate sanitary products, toiletries and personal hygiene materials. At the end of the month, SWIM exec members will collect these donated goods and prepare care packages and donate these to local women's shelters around Brisbane!

To make this a bit more fun, and to give people more incentive to donate, SWIM will have a target to reach 10kg of donated goods, and if we reach this goal, we are hoping to hold a pizza party!

Tuesday, March 8, 2022 - Biases in Women’s Illness (International Women’s Day Fundraiser Talk – Hosted by UQ SWIM)

This International Women’s Day, the theme is #BreakTheBias. Supporting Women In Medicine (SWIM) will be hosting our inaugural IWD talk on: “Biases in Women’s Illness: The Role of Adversity and Trauma”, presented by Professor Leonie Callaway at the TRI Auditorium and raising funds for ‘Room to Read’, a global nonprofit for children’s literacy and girls’ education.

A very strong relationship has been shown between exposure to adverse childhood experiences (sexual, physical, emotional trauma) and metabolic illnesses such as gestational diabetes and obesity in women. Additionally, these tragic events can further contribute to pain, physical illness, and mental illness – which, unfortunately, may lead to the experience of being repeatedly dismissed by doctors and not listened to.

Join SWIM this International Women’s Day (Tues 8 March 2022) in welcoming Professor Leonie Callaway, an esteemed Obstetric Physician, in exploring the causes and conditions of trauma-related illness in some women’s lives to provide an important explanation as to why they suffer.

#IWD2022 #BreakTheBias

Date: 8 March 2022 (Tuesday)
Time: 6:15 – 8 pm
Location: Auditorium, Translational Research Institute

Topic: Biases in Women’s Illness: The Role of Adversity and Trauma
Presenter: Professor Leonie Callaway

All students, doctors and health professionals are welcome at this event. You do not need to be a SWIM member (but do consider becoming one!)

We are requesting a ‘gold coin’ donation for attendance to this talk to raise funds for ‘Room to Read’. Donate online or in cash at the door. There will also be baked goodies available for purchase on the day!

Book your ticket here: https://www.trybooking.com/BXFSB

Please note: Do not to attend this event if you are unwell, have COVID-19 symptoms; have been overseas or Australian hotspots in the last 14 days; or have been in close contact with a confirmed case. TRI has the right to refuse service and must insist that anyone with these symptoms leaves the venue.
