2019
President
Naseera Nasem
Hello and welcome! I’m Naseera: Brisbane South-Sider and SWIM/ public health/ emergency medicine enthusiast. My passion for gender equity and inability to sit still landed me on the SWIM executive 2 years ago, and I haven’t looked back. I’m honoured to be the SWIM President this year and super proud to be working with such an amazing team!
SWIM provides unique opportunities to medical students of all year levels with a range of events that support them throughout medical school - academic, social, professional (development and networking), wellbeing and more! We aim to inspire, empower and connect, striving for a diverse, equitable medical system and workforce. In 2019, we’re planning on making our most popular academic and social events even better, stepping up our fitness and networking activities and boosting our advocacy portfolio. And that’s just the beginning, so stay tuned.
If you see me around, come say hi or have a chat. I’ll be at a lot of SWIM events and Brisbane clinical sites this year and I love getting to know all our members!

Secretary
Alex Sadler
Hello! My name is Alexandra Sadler and I am the SWIM Secretary for 2019. I am currently based in Toowoomba for my third year of medical school. I did my undergraduate science (biomed) degree at UQ, making this my 6th year as a Queenslander (still an AFL fan though). Originally, I am from Adelaide. Feel free to ask where the best wineries are, if you decide to visit!
Like many other UQ medical students, I benefited greatly from SWIM events, such as the clinical exam tutorials and buddy high tea, in my first year. As such, I wanted to get involved with such a productive and worthwhile club. I am an extremely organised person and a stickler for detail, thus the secretary position suits me very well. I am very keen to put my advanced Excel skills to good use in 2019, and support the club that has given me, and so many other budding medical students, so much.

Treasurer
Sherrie Swee
Hi there! My name is Sherrie, born and raised in Singapore, and I am your 2019 SWIM treasurer!
SWIM is an incredible organisation that provides medical students with both academic and social support. In my first year, SWIM offered many amazing events that were extremely fun and fruitful. I thoroughly enjoyed participating in these events last year and look forward to assisting SWIM this year to organise even more exciting and value-adding events as part of the executive team!
With all the amazing events planned for 2019, I am looking forward to working hand in hand with the team and bring forth for all of you programmes that will cater to each of your needs and interests. As your treasurer for 2019, I will also ensure that funds will be managed accurately and with transparency.
I look forward to meeting you this year and hope to see you at one of our events.

Academic VP
Nicole Chan
Hey guys! I’m Nicole and I’ll be your 2019 SWIM Academic Vice-President!
Entering my third year of my degree, I can still remember how nervous I was for my clinical exams back in my first year. However, I had the amazing Clinical Examination Tutorials put on by SWIM to always fall back on and wouldn’t have survived clinical practice without these tutorials. Aside from these CETs, SWIM is an all-inclusive society with much to offer – whether it’s the Cocktail Night to grab a drink with friends, or the networking opportunities in the “Women in …” series, SWIM has something for everyone.
As the CET convenor last year, I’m excited to continue maintaining the amazing reputation these clinical examination tutorials have for our fresh crop of first year students in 2019 as Academic VP. I also hope to see the return of our Professional Development Workshop to better equip our Phase 2 students in preparation for graduation and employment. I hope to see you at our next SWIM event! Until then, if you have any questions, please feel free to send me an email!

Social VP
Carolina Townsend Arellano
Hello! I’m Carolina from sunny Perth in WA, now in my second year here at UQ. I’m super excited to be your social VP for SWIM this year. It is an amazing organisation which really helped me to find a balance during my first year.
I’m looking forward to organising SWIM’s social events this year, the object being to help everybody build connections and broaden their outlook, whilst having some fun at the same time. To this end, we’ll be continuing the Women in Medicine/Diverse Medical Careers/Surgery/Rural Medicine networking events that have been so popular during the last few years. I encourage everyone to come along to these events and meet the diverse group of outstanding clinicians who will joining us.
We’ll also be continuing with our successful cocktail fundraising night this year – I’m looking forward to seeing you all there! Meanwhile, if you have ideas for other events, or just want to meet-up for a chat, then please let me know.

Community and Initiatives
Hannah Hassum
Hi, I’m Hannah and I’m very excited to be your Community and Initiatives officer for 2019! I am looking forward to giving back to the wonderful SWIM community. As a first year, I really enjoyed participating in all SWIM had to offer and am thrilled to get more involved.
This year I’m keen to continue to provide a variety of fitness opportunities, including the running and yoga programs. I’m hoping to create a relaxed, inviting atmosphere where people can come along and look after their mental and physical well-being.
I am also eager to make giving back to the community easy for busy med students! We will be continuing with the Ronald McDonald House as well as supporting new initiatives that align with SWIM’s goals.
If you have any questions about my role or any suggestions for charities and initiatives that SWIM should support, please send me an email!

First Year Representative
Jessie Binns
Hiya! My name is Jessie, and I’m stoked to be SWIM’s first year rep for 2019! I first heard about SWIM during my undergraduate years at UQ, and was excited to get involved in such an inclusive society. SWIM is definitely a group worth lecture bashing about!
This year, I’m hoping to improve first year engagement, encourage first years to be aware of gender issues in medicine, and contribute to the sense of community we have here in SWIM. If you’re a first year with questions or suggestions, feel free to email me, or come and find me at our events (or in my second home, the Building 69 student hub).
